Electric Scooter Bajaj Chetak launched at starting price Rs 1 lakh

To keep up with the trend of electric vehicles, the Indian automaker has launched Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter today in the market. This is Bajaj’s first electric two wheeler in India with a starting price of Rs 1 lakh. The new EV scooter is named after Bajaj’s older version popular scooter “Chetak” which ruled the two wheeler market from 1980 to 2000 in India.

The new electric Chetak scooter from Bajaj is launched in two models in six color variants. The Chetak Urbane model which has drum brakes will come with Rs 1 lakh price tag and the other model Chetak Premium with disc brakes will have Rs 1.15 lakh price tag.

If you wish to buy a Bajaj Chetak EV, you can do so paying Rs 2000 as advance from Jan 15, 2020 initially in Pune which will be released at other locations gradually.

The biggest constraint for EV vehicles is its range, and looks like Bajaj is reasonably ok for local travelling which offers 85 km to 95 km range in sport and eco modes with a full single charge. The 3 KwH, 48 volts battery powers a 4080 watt motor generating 16 Nm torque.

The biggest question in mind for a potential EV scooter buyer is its speed of charging and Bajaj Chetak Electric scooter charges fully in 5 hours and for quick need it reaches 25 percent in 1 hour. The battery can be charged from 5 to 15 amp power socket. The company offers 3 years or 50000 km warranty on the battery.

The other specifications like LED lights and alloy wheels make Chetak EV look good. Sometimes it looks like a newer version of a Vespa.

With a very high price tag and a limited travel range Bajaj Chetak can be used only for local and nearby commuting. We have to wait and see how two wheeler EV business picks up in India. May be some kind of initiatives from the Government is needed.
