These days we often see news like Member of Parliament releasing funds for a certain program. You would be wondering what is MPLADS fund actually and who uses it for what purpose.
MPLADS in full form is Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. It is a Government scheme for the Indian MP’s that came into existence in the year 1993. Under this scheme an MP can recommend funds to a public work of his choice in his constituency. Each Member of Parliament is allocated Rs 5 crores for MPLADS for each year.
MP’s can only recommend a work under this scheme for the development works and as per the guidelines. The District collectors hold the responsibility of allocating the MPLADS funds. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) is currently handling the operations of this scheme.
Type of works that are eligible under MPLADS are construction of hospitals, schools, community halls, roads, praks, electric works, irrigation works, public healthcare and many other public development works that are approved by the Government under the guidelines.
